Our ethos

Gardening good for the planet

GOOD FOR THE PLANET

Good environmental stewardship underpins every decision we make as gardeners - that’s why all of our gardening equipment is powered 100% by renewable energy. Our planters are made using FSC-certified timber, recycled plastic liners, low VOC paint, and, if needed, filled with peat-free compost. By bringing food closer to our residents, we reduce the amount of plastic, pesticides, fossil fuels, fertilisers, water and land needed to grow food, while donated materials save pots, seeds and plants from ending up in landfill. All of the green waste we collect from our customers is turned into compost. Heck, even our bank is carbon-neutral!

GOOD FOR THE PEOPLE

We are proud to serve a city as diverse as Newcastle upon Tyne and we put our communities at the heart of all of our work. To make good on this pledge, we reinvest most of our profits into greening up neighbourhoods with colourful vegetable planters, delivering workshops to first-time food growers and improving the green spaces of those who cannot do it themselves. Our street gardens, seed swaps and vegetable stalls strengthen community cohesion, while the plants we provide improve the mood, air quality, diet and health of local residents, reviving streets across the city - one household at a time.

Nature-friendly gardening

GOOD FOR THE WILDLIFE

Working at the interface of urban and natural environments, we have a unique opportunity to enhance the habitats of the rich wildlife living in our city. We use only recycled wood when crafting our bee hotels, bird houses and feeders, and all our container ponds are made of 100% recycled plastic. We make sure the flowers we provide are good for pollinators and all plants we grow onsite are raised organically. We do not use synthetic herbicides and pesticides in our work, and we encourage our customers to do the same. Through our network of street gardens, we hope to provide wildlife havens in otherwise empty, paved-over neighbourhoods.
